Teenager Minty plans a peaceful holiday near historical Belton House with her mother's godmother, "Aunt" Mary. However, after leaving, her mother suffers an accident and falls into a coma at the hospital. Filled with grief, Minty starts wandering around Belton House grounds when she accidentally touches a sundial or moon dial in the garden. She is instantly transported to different time periods—first to the late 19th century where she meets Tom, a sickly servant who needs help; then to the 18th century where she discovers Sarah, a mysterious child in danger.
