In the small town of Mercy, Saskatchewan, a Muslim community has settled, led by community leader Yasir Hamoudi, a local building contractor. His wife Sarah, a Caucasian ex-Christian, has converted to Islam for her husband. Their daughter Rayyan, a feminist Muslim doctor, lives in the community. The Imam, Amaar Rashid, a young Canadian-born ex-lawyer from Toronto, has replaced the previous Imam, who was deemed too extreme. Other notable residents include Fatima Dinssa, a Nigerian Muslim who runs the local diner and is strict about her religion but more liberal in her cultural values. The Muslims coexist with their Christian neighbors, sometimes harmoniously, sometimes not. Reverend Duncan Magee welcomes the Muslims, while Mayor Ann Popowicz sees them as potential voters. However, local radio host Fred Tupper is suspicious of the Muslims and their supposed terrorist ways, and some townsfolk are wary of Amaar due to his Toronto upbringing.
