In 1991, arcade video games were the latest trend, and becoming a professional gamer was an unrealistic dream in an industry yet to expand its reach. Sixth-grader Haruo Yaguchi's exceptional aptitude for video games had earned him admiration from local arcades and boosted his confidence, only to be shattered when fellow classmate Akira Oono easily defeated him in Street Fighter 2. Akira was described as rich, pretty, and smart — almost the ideal girl. But despite Haruo's numerous shortcomings as a person, his dominance in video games was unassailable.
