The show follows the misadventures of George and Mildred Roper, a lovable but eccentric couple who have just relocated to a traditional middle-class neighborhood.
George and Mildred Roper are forced to leave their home in South Kensington due to a compulsory purchase order. They move to a middle-class house in suburbia, next door to Jeffrey and Ann Fourmile. However, Mildred's dream of a better life is threatened by George's constant embarrassing behavior, as well as the snobbishness of Jeffrey and her own family members.
