A city in chaos: From economy to culture, politics to the underworld, everything is undergoing radical change. Speculation and inflation are eroding the foundations of Germany’s Weimar Republic. Poverty and unemployment contrast sharply with the excesses and creativity of Berlin's nightlife. Gereon Rath, a young police inspector from Cologne, arrives in Berlin to solve a case: an extortion ring run by the Berlin Mafia. At first glance, it appears simple, but soon reveals itself as a scandal that will change both Gereon and his associates' lives forever.
