The devastating consequences of the slave trade in 18th century Bristol are explored through the powerful but impossible attraction of well-born Frances and her Yoruban slave, Mehuru. In 1787, Bristol is booming, with its docks and new houses flourishing. Josiah Cole, a small dockside trader, seeks to join the city's elite by marrying Frances Scott, a woman with valuable social connections. As Frances enters the world of Bristol merchants, she becomes dependent on the trade of sugar, rum, and slaves, including the charismatic Mehuru. Despite her marriage, Frances finds herself drawn to Mehuru, who is determined to fight for his freedom, sparking tensions that threaten to erupt.
