In August 1914, Austrian star Elsa Duranyi and English matinee idol Alan Barclay are in love and plan to marry, but the War intervenes, and Elsa mysteriously disappears. Alan is appointed to British Intelligence due to his fluency in German and poses as a shell-shocked German prisoner named Hans Teller. He is sent to Germany as part of an exchange of prisoners. Meanwhile, Elsa becomes a spy for the Fatherland and operates in Monte Carlo, where she targets Allied officers to extract war secrets.
