In 1936 Shanghai, a city of political intrigue, a Russian Countess named Sofia finds herself stateless and struggling to support her family after the Revolution. She takes on work as a bar-girl and taxi dancer, but finds solace in a relationship with Jackson, a blind former diplomat who owns a sophisticated bar called The White Countess. As their bond deepens, they become entangled in the city's downfall to Japanese invaders.
