In the early 20th-century American Midwest, a charming con man named Harold Hill travels from town to town, posing as a music professor to solve youth problems by forming boys' marching bands. He takes money from the townsfolk, but has no degree and knows nothing about music. When he arrives in River City, Iowa, he meets Marian Paroo, the town's music teacher and librarian, who is immune to his charms. However, Harold's scheme is threatened when a former grifter colleague, Marcellus Washburn, helps him and a group of traveling salesmen close in on him.
