In mythical Japan, a tailor becomes Lord High Executioner and must find someone to execute before the ruling Mikado arrives. He chooses a strolling minstrel who loves a beautiful woman, but she is also loved by the tailor. The minstrel considers suicide, but the tailor offers a solution: marry the woman for a month, then be executed, just in time for the Mikado's arrival. However, the minstrel is the Mikado's son, who ran away to avoid an arranged marriage to an older woman. The Mikado's arrival brings all the storylines together.
