Early 10th century AD, Britain is in turmoil after King Edward's death. Two sons, Aethelstan and Aelfweard, vie for the throne, but their claim is disputed. Aethelstan is influenced by Ingilmundr, a half-Dane, half-Saxon with prophetic powers. The Saxons' enemies, including the Danes, Scots, and smaller kingdoms, see this as an opportunity to invade. Northumbria, ruled by Uhtred of Bebbanburg, is caught in the middle.
