In 490 BC, during the Medic Wars, Philippides, a commander of the Sacred Guard, returns to Athens with the Olympic laurel crown. He is courted by Charis, a servant, in an attempt to neutralize the guard. However, his heart belongs to Andromeda, a young girl. News of the Persian King Darius's army marching on Greece forces Philippides to put personal matters aside. He journeys to Sparta to secure an alliance, survives an assassination attempt, and returns with Sparta's engagement. The Persian fleet, led by traitor Theocrites, threatens Athens, and Philippides must hold out with the Sacred Guard until Miltiades' victorious troops arrive.
