The Von Essenbeck family's wealth and influence remained unscathed even after Germany's defeat in World War I and the subsequent Great Depression. In 1934, the baron invites his family to a dinner party, where they are joined by a Nazi party cousin and a rising executive from the baron's company. As the evening unfolds, two young girls recite poetry and play hide-and-seek with their cousin Martin. But the evening takes a dark turn when a scream rings out, and the baron is found shot with his own gun, leading to the father's sudden departure from the country.
