Fond de l'Etang is a boarding school for troubled boys in the French countryside, led by the strict and egotistical Principal Rachin. However, when new supervisor M. Clément Mathieu arrives in 1949, he brings a fresh approach, focusing on discipline tailored to the crime and encouraging a choir among the students. Despite initial resistance, Mathieu's methods slowly improve the atmosphere and transform individual students, including the introverted Pierre Morhange, who harbors a hidden talent for music, and Pépinot, a young boy struggling with guidance and focus. As Mathieu navigates the challenges of Rachin, the students, and a newly arrived troubled student, Pascal Mondain, he leaves a lasting impact on the lives of Morhange and Pépinot, who reunite decades later to read his memoirs.
