Novelist MacMillan "Mack" Forester becomes fascinated with a 17-year-old street urchin, The Brat, while observing a night court with his friend Judge O'Flathery. Mack pays her bail and takes her to his country estate, where she befriends his family and offers her city-smart wisdom. As The Brat becomes close to Mack and his brother Steven, she advises Steven to follow his heart and pursue his deceased father's ranch in the West, but he becomes hesitant due to his growing feelings for her.
