In 1975, India is under Emergency rule, and the lawless Chambal region is home to a group of rebels led by Man Singh. When Man Singh's gang targets a wealthy village to loot, they're ambushed by the police, and Man Singh is killed. The surviving members, including Vakil and Lakhna, flee and accuse Lakhna of betrayal. As they escape, they meet Indumati Tomar, whose sister has been brutally raped and needs medical attention. The gang agrees to help, but things take a turn when Indu's family accuses her of murder and demands her and her sister be handed over. Lakhna refuses to comply, leading to a confrontation that sets the stage for the rest of the film.
