Dexter Gordon plays Dale Turner, a jazz musician struggling with addiction and personal demons in 1950s New York. He gets a chance to play in Paris, where he finds respect and appreciation for his music and humanity, unmarred by racism. A fan befriends him, trying to help him overcome his struggles, and his relationship with the man and his daughter rekindles his passion for music and life before his untimely death.
