In the small Polish town of Malava, a group of boisterous people have thrived on horse-related activities. However, their lives take a drastic turn when a Russian garrison, led by Captain Stoloff, occupies the town and seizes all the horses for the Russian-Japanese War. With no horses to steal, a young man named Kifke is unable to marry his love, Estusha, and many young men face the prospect of being drafted into the Russian army. Against this backdrop of turmoil, a man named Zavill decides to take action.
