In 2003, 20-year-old soldier Tom Keys and five others were ambushed and killed in Iraq. Tom's parents, Reg and Sally, were devastated to learn that their son and his colleagues were inadequately armed and equipped. Sally's grief led to a deep depression, while Reg's anger towards Tony Blair's decision to send British troops into the war drove him to stand as an independent candidate against Blair in the 2005 election.
