In 18th century South Africa, a Dutch sailor and a young Khoi herder, from the Hottentot tribal group, fall in love in a Cape Town penal colony on Robben Island. Despite being imprisoned, they face trial and legal battles as their love affair is deemed a crime, punishable by death, due to its interracial nature and sodomy being considered a worse crime than murder.
