A young Canadian copy editor, Frances Mackenzie, lands her dream job working with her favorite author, Michael Tate, in New York. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers she's pregnant and her boyfriend Calvin, a jazz musician, is away on tour. With her visa expired, Frances is forced to return to Canada to live with her parents. But Calvin's return brings joy and support during the pregnancy and birth of their son, only to leave Frances again when she struggles to express her feelings of love.
