Oliver Pease, a classified ad salesman, pretends to his wife that he's a roving reporter with more responsibility and pay. He convinces the editor to let him write a column about the influence of children on people's lives. Pursued by a bookie, Oliver interviews various individuals, including musicians, an actress, and a magician, hearing their stories of how children changed their lives. However, his deceptions threaten to catch up with him at the paper and with his wife, who had a reason for suggesting the question.
