Oba: The Last Samurai background

Oba: The Last Samurai

In the final days of World War II, a dwindling band of Japanese soldiers persists in their defiance, refusing to yield despite the Allied forces' capture of the island and the Emperor's official surrender.

The Battle for Saipan reached its climax in July 1944 as the Imperial Japanese Army Garrison launched a final suicidal charge against the American Marines. Among the few survivors was Captain Oba Sakae, who avoided capture and joined a small band of soldiers and civilians in the jungle. As the highest-ranking officer left alive, Oba took command and led a guerrilla war against the Marines, evading capture and launching hit-and-run raids for over 512 days.
