Bigger Thomas, an African American from a poor neighborhood, works as a chauffeur for a wealthy white family in the suburbs. He is tasked with driving Mary, the daughter, to university, but instead she and her Socialist boyfriend Jan spend the day drinking and partying. After Mary becomes drunk, Bigger is left to get her to her bedroom undetected. Panicked, he accidentally kills her and disposes of the body in the furnace. Jan is accused of the crime, and Bigger plays a role in the accusations against him.
