The Secret Service is stumped by a ten-year-old case of a mysterious counterfeiter, dubbed Mister 880, who has been producing amateurish $1 bills with a typographical error. The bills have been distributed solely in New York City, with each monthly haul amounting to less than $50. To crack the case, the Secret Service brings in Steve Buchanan, a fresh pair of eyes from Los Angeles. As Steve investigates, he unknowingly meets Mister 880, a kindly old man named William 'Skipper' Miller, who uses the money to buy second-hand trinkets. When Steve falls for Skipper's friend and neighbor, Ann Winslow, he must navigate his romance while trying to catch the counterfeiter, all while wondering if Ann will remember where she got the fake bills and whether she'll tip off Skipper before he's caught.
