'Master Harold'... and the Boys background

'Master Harold'... and the Boys

A young white man named Harold is faced with the challenging reunion of his estranged, wheelchair-bound father, an avid drinker, who is returning home. As a result, Harold's pent-up emotions transform into racial hostility towards the two African American men who work for the family.

Young Hally, the son of a wealthy white couple, visits their fashionable tearoom and witnesses the two Black employees, who are also friends, practicing their ballroom dance routine. The three engage in playful banter, but when Hally receives disturbing news about his father, he lashes out at the workers, and the situation escalates into a violent racial confrontation.
