Ivan Bibic, a survivor of a Japanese POW camp, returns to his Pittsburgh suburb, haunted by nightmares. He rekindles his childhood romance with Maria Bosic, a fellow Yugoslavian, and they get married, but Ivan struggles with psychological impotence and feelings of unworthiness. Meanwhile, a charming musician named Clarence Butts moves in and begins to seduce Maria, threatening their marriage.
