In 1995, a Russian IL-76 transport plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan, carrying a cargo of ammunition disguised as humanitarian aid. The Taliban captured the Russian crew of five, including the commander, copilot, flight engineer, navigator, and radio operator. Despite their refusal to teach the Islamists how to pilot the plane, the crew was imprisoned in a rundown house and subjected to harsh conditions. As months passed, the crew held on to the hope that Russia would intervene and rescue them, but their hopes were crushed by the lack of action. With their situation growing more desperate, the crew realized that their only chance of survival was to escape.
