Agnès Le Roux, daughter of the Palais de la Méditerranée owner, falls deeply in love with Maurice Agnelet, a lawyer 10 years her senior. As war rages on, she becomes embroiled in a complex web of deceit when Fratoni, a rival of her mother's, offers Maurice a large sum to take control of the casino. Agnès's world is shattered when Maurice accepts the offer, leading her to attempt suicide and then disappear.
