In 1963, Jan Díte is released from prison after 15 years and seeks refuge in a remote Czechoslovakian village near the German border. Through flashbacks, his story unfolds: a clever and ambitious young man from a humble background, who becomes a successful waiter at upscale establishments with the help of a patron. As he navigates the world of the wealthy, Jan becomes entangled in a complicated relationship with a German woman named Líza, whose connection could lead to wealth or ruin.
