In New Mexico, a widow and former teacher, Katherine, hires a lonely mathematician, Archie, to be her gardener, and they form a close friendship. However, when her estranged daughter, Lucy, returns and Archie becomes obsessed with her, things take a dark turn. After Lucy is tragically gunned down by Archie, he is arrested and a local lawyer, Joseph, takes on his case. As Archie plots to seem insane to avoid the death penalty, the community wonders if justice will prevail.
