Brydie White, a 17-year-old, is emotionally scarred from an accidental shooting death she was involved in as a child, which she doesn't remember. Her mother, a recluse and alcoholic, treats her like a child, despite her physical transformation into a young woman. Brydie's new fascination is burying dead animals in the local church graveyard, which she convinces the town's children to do. The animal burials spark outrage, and the townsfolk see Brydie as a menace. However, Reverend Philip Moss, the vicar, tries to understand her and find a way to help her. When danger looms, a Gypsy named Roibin Krisenki takes it upon himself to protect Brydie.
