A young boy named Little Claude joins a Gypsy family on their travels across French roads during World War II, seeking a new family after his parents disappeared. The Gypsies are forced to settle in a town, but they're arrested and sent to an internment camp. With the help of a kind mayor and schoolteacher, they're eventually freed and given a piece of property to settle, but their nomadic nature makes it hard to adapt to a sedentary lifestyle.
