In 1866, two families, the Rileys and the McCluskeys, live in the Texas countryside. The Rileys make a living by trapping animals, while the McCluskeys, who lost their cattle business in the Civil War, steal from the Rileys' traps. When Wade, a war veteran and uncle to the Riley children, visits his family, he discovers the McCluskeys' wrongdoing and decides to put a stop to it, only to find himself in a new, personal war.
