A scholar at the University of Wittenberg, Faustus earns his doctorate and becomes consumed by an insatiable desire for knowledge and power. He uses necromancy to summon Mephistopheles from Hell, and in exchange for his soul, Lucifer grants him 24 years of life, during which Mephistopheles will serve as his slave.
