The film tells the story of the USS John Paul Jones, from its construction to a harrowing battle with a Japanese submarine. The crew includes Steve Boleslavski, a welder who reenlists as Chief Boatswain's Mate. After struggling through sea trials, the ship is assigned to the mail route, but is soon caught up in a desperate battle.
