Jean Dujardin, an Academy Award-winner, is experiencing a mid-life crisis after a divorce. He leaves his past behind and finds a vintage fringed deerskin jacket with supernatural powers at a roadside petrol station. He moves to a quiet French alpine village, where he is mistaken for an independent filmmaker by a bartender, Adèle Haenel, who is also an aspiring editor with natural production instincts. They form a partnership to create a film inspired by the jacket's visions.
