The movie opens with a narrator, the late L, who addresses the audience directly, summarizing the events of the previous Relight film. The scene then cuts to Near and Mello discovering L's death, with Mello declaring his independence. Four years later, Near is about to leave Wammy's House, and a flashback occurs, adapted from the Death Note One-Shot Special manga chapter, where L speaks to the children at the orphanage before investigating the Kira case.
