Darren Shan, a model student and family pride, is drawn to a freak show with his reckless friend Steve. They sneak in to see the star attraction, a vampire named Larten Crepsley, who performs with a deadly spider. After the show, Darren stays behind to admire the spider and overhears Steve's failed attempt to become a vampire. When Steve is bitten by the spider, Darren seeks help from Larten, agreeing to become his half-vampire assistant in exchange for an antidote.
