In 1980s Zurich, lawyer Barbara Hug seeks to reform the Swiss justice system. During the youth riots, she defends left-wing autonomists like punk girl Heike, using the court to expose the system's flaws. When Walter Stürm, a charismatic and self-centered criminal, seeks her advice after escaping from prison, Barbara is drawn to his charm. Stürm becomes a symbol of freedom and individuality, idolized by a generation. After being imprisoned again, he's sent to solitary confinement and becomes suicidal, while Barbara neglects her own health under the pressure.
