In Northern China, a free-spirited bar singer and her friends are forced to move to Peking after being evicted from their apartment. They rent rooms from a retired opera singer, who becomes their landlady. The young people's carefree nature clashes with the older woman's strict rules, leading to a series of playful pranks and retaliations.
