After the Civil War, three drifters, Billy Joe Cuddler, Preacher, and his assistant, a demobilized African-American soldier, find a way to steal a mine's payroll from a moving stagecoach. The payroll belongs to the silver mine in Silvertown, and its theft is discovered upon arrival. Despite the delay in receiving their wages, the miners return to work, and the mine owner orders Ben Novack, the mine engineer, to work with Sheriff John Ferguson to find the culprits. Meanwhile, the drifter trio plans to steal the mine's silver shipment en route to the federal silver depository, while also saving the stagecoach from an attack by notorious outlaw Burton and his gang.

In a surprising twist, a group of thieves' attempted heist of a town's valuable silver shipment takes an unexpected turn, ultimately leading them to be hailed as heroes by the very community they initially sought to deceive.
