During World War II, a young man joins the Marines but is discharged due to not meeting qualifications, wearing a light blue uniform. He meets a war veteran who wants to desert, and the veteran mugs him, taking his clothes and leaving him in the veteran's uniform. The young man hitchhikes home, stopping in a small Colorado town where he's mistaken for a war hero and receives freebies. He falls in love with a waitress who invites him to stay with her family. Meanwhile, a nearby woods supposedly hold an American-Japanese internment camp, though in reality, there was no such camp. Later, three teenage boys escape from the actual camp, and the young man is tasked with finding them. The townspeople, eager to hunt them down and kill them, view the boys as enemy soldiers.
Baby Blue Marine
A Marine recruit is sent home in "baby blue" fatigues after failing basic training, only to be mugged by a battle-hardened Marine Raider on his way back, leaving him to hitchhike in a uniform that doesn't match his reality.
