In a small Indian village, Laxmi and her deaf-mute husband Kishtaya struggle to make ends meet as laborers for a wealthy landlord. When Kishtaya is caught stealing and severely beaten, he leaves Laxmi alone and pregnant. Surya, the landlord's son, becomes intimate with Laxmi, causing tension within the family.
