In 1876, Spain, the Third Carlist War rages on. A church in the Basque Country is bombed, killing the nuns and orphan girls except one, who is saved by a mysterious woman claiming to have healing powers. The girl becomes a vampire and is taken in by the woman, who teaches her to survive and hunt at night. Ten years later, the girl, now named Amaia, is discovered by a local man, Cándido, and is taken in to heal. Despite her struggles to live as a human, Amaia's vampire instincts cause trouble, leading the local priest to believe she is possessed by the devil. Cándido and Amaia escape to a new town, but 50 years later, Cándido passes away, leaving Amaia alone and desperate for immortality. The Spanish Civil War breaks out, and Amaia meets a mature Miguel and, surprisingly, Mother, the woman who turned her into a vampire.
