Upper-class Connecticut couple Agnes and Tobias, whose relationship has been strained since the loss of their son, find comfort in their uneasy routine. Agnes's sister Claire lives with them, insisting her perpetual drinking is a choice rather than an addiction. Their daughter Julia, on the verge of her fourth divorce, returns home to find her room occupied by Tobias and Agnes's best friends, Harry and Edna, who have fled their own home in search of refuge from an unnamed terror.
