A young boy named Buddy, whose parents are divorced and mother is an actress in New York, is sent to live with his older cousins in a small southern town. He brings new energy to their home and forms a strong bond with one of the simpler ladies, Sook. Together, they embark on various adventures, including baking 31 fruitcakes as Christmas presents, even mailing some to notable figures like President and Mrs. Roosevelt and Jean Harlowe. Just before Christmas, one of the cousins starts to question whether it's best for Buddy to continue living with them.
