Toronto/Montreal-based Russell Yuen is a highly respected and in-demand character actor in Canada, known for his versatility and extensive range of roles.
In his early career, Yuen worked a variety of jobs to make ends meet while establishing himself as an actor. Unlike many of his peers, he didn't wait tables or serve drinks, instead, he pursued his passion for athletics. He spent time as a white water rescuer and rafting guide in Northern Quebec, managed a Nautilus facility, and worked as a fitness trainer.
As a dedicated athlete, Yuen also enjoys scuba diving, mountain and ice-climbing, in-line skating, mountain biking, and fencing. His background in martial arts, specifically Shaolin, allowed him to transition from bit parts to more substantial roles, playing Asian gangsters and fighters.
Yuen's breakout opportunity came with The Red Violin, followed by a string of feature film roles in a variety of genres, including action, drama, and comedy. Some of his notable screen performances include Bulletproof Monk, Owning Mahoney, Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity, Shattered Glass, Century Hotel, Between the Moon and Montevideo, The Bone Collector, The Heist, Pluto Nash, and Eye Of The Beholder.
As a talented and versatile actor, Yuen has also made a name for himself in television, with an extensive list of credits on both English and French projects and series. His recent work includes a recurring role on the popular French series Jack Carter, as well as principal roles in Relic Hunter, The Associates, A Touch of Hope, and The Adventures of Jules Verne.
Born and raised in the Montreal suburbs of St. Laurent and Pierrefond, Yuen is a fourth-generation Canadian with deep connections to Vancouver, where his extended family still resides. Despite his parents' guidance to pursue a career in medicine, Yuen's passion for acting led him to study Theatre at Concordia University, where he excelled in the honors program. He has since found continued success in film and television, solidifying his position as one of Canada's busiest character actors.
