Paulo Menezes is a Brazilian filmmaker currently pursuing his studies in directing at the renowned Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB). Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to work on various documentaries for prestigious international networks such as the BBC and Al Jazeera in the UK.
One of his most notable works is the 2019 film Lolo, a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the experiences of gay kids navigating a heteronormative world. Lolo has made a significant impact, screening at over 200 film festivals worldwide.
Menezes's subsequent short film, Pommes Paradies, premiered at the esteemed Filmfest Dresden and was subsequently selected by the Association of German Short Film (AG Kurzfilm) as part of their official Cannes catalog in 2021.
His 2021 short film, It Is Not the Brazilian Homosexuals Who Are Perverse, But the Situation in Which They Live, has also gained widespread recognition, screening at numerous prominent film festivals including the Uppsala International Short Film Festival, the BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival, and the Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, among others.
In 2022, It Is Not the Brazilian Homosexuals Who Are Perverse, But the Situation in Which They Live took home not one, but two prestigious awards at the Filmfest Dresden - the German Film Critics Award and the LUCA award, solidifying Menezes's reputation as a talented and innovative filmmaker.
