Thomas, a Welsh-born New Zealand actor and writer, made a significant impact in the film, television, and stage industries. Born in Llanelli, south Wales, he was raised in a family that spoke Welsh fluently, with his grandmother's passion for drama sparking an early interest in acting.
After completing his formal education, Thomas initially pursued a career in quantity surveying, but soon grew disenchanted with office work. He then attended Liverpool University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Celtic Studies, as well as English Literature.
During his time at university, Thomas began to explore his creative side, writing and acting in university revues. He furthered his education by attending Oxford University, where he obtained a Master's degree in Literature.
While at Oxford, Thomas met and married a New Zealander, and after completing his studies, they relocated to Australia, where he lectured at La Trobe University. However, they soon made the move to Wellington, New Zealand, in 1976. Thomas began teaching romantic and Victorian poetry at Victoria University before transitioning to a full-time career as an actor and writer in 1977.
